With the biggest Pro race in Utah fast approaching, there are several important elements of this great event we want everyone to be aware of.
First thing; the 1,000 Warriors race, which covers the same course as the Pros from Park City to Snowbird on Saturday, August 22nd, closes for online registration Thursday, July 21st.
Race the Tour of Utah crit! We will have nearly a full calendar of categories on Sunday, August 23rd beginning at 9:00am with Cat 4/5, Women 1/2/3/4, Masters 40+, Cat 1/2/3 and a Kids race. Race flyer and registration information is available at Sportsbaseonline, go to: https://new.sportsbaseonline.com/events/index.xhtml?categoryId=10730
The Tour also is in need of volunteers, please take the opportunity to get a front row seat to watch the Pros and help keep this race in Utah. We need survey takers, course marshals and race "Experts" that can roam the crowds and answer questions about bike racing. We also need host housing for Pro teams visiting Utah to race. Go to www.tourofutah.com and click on the Volunteer button to sign up for any of these positions.
Finally, we are offering several exciting "backstage" opportunities for the Tour of Utah. These packages help raise funds to insure we can keep putting this great event on while giving someone unique opportunities like: dinner with Bob Roll, a training ride with Floyd Landis and Team OUCH, ride in the race caravan, guaranteed entry into LoToJa 2010, VIP passes and much more. For details contact Terry McGinnis or watch the website, www.tourofutah.com .

Hi All, We are trying to do a better job of getting out information to all UCA members, and we would appreciate it if all UCA members would join the UCA email list. There are occasional announcements that are very important, like timing chip information, race issues, etc., that need to reach every UCA member. Currently, we only have a small percentage of the UCA membership on this list. Your email will NOT be sold or given to any other parties, and you will NOT be spammed or otherwise bothered... only important UCA business will be passed along. Here is the process. You do it through Google. Go to Google.com and go to "my account". After you have either signed in or created an account, go to "Groups" and then sign up for the Utah Cycling Assoc group. Otherwise,
if you can't or won't do this, this Web site is the next best thing to find out information—check it frequently. News is at
the top left (check the archive for older news) and the forums also
have issues and answers! Or email one of the UCA directors (contact tab).
Thanks, Jeff Clawson

There is a lot of discussion lately about chips and chip timing and rightfully so. I would like to address some of what I am hearing and give a little background. We are not trying to hide anything. We want everyone to have the information: - The chips don’t work – False. The actual chips do work. There have been cases of about three chips that were reading incorrectly, but they have been replaced. We also had an issue at one race where the timing box that was sent to us the previous day did not work. But, the chips are accurate and work as advertised. All of our issues have been handling the data and getting all of the registration information in the software to use the data. - USA Cycling is getting a kickback on chip sales – False. If we would have gone with the other system (AMB) USAC would have received a kick back. But, Winning Time actually gave us a $4.00 discount for UCA riders when they purchase the chips. The UCA and USAC get no money. - Tax Day was cancelled due to chips – False. The UCA has offered all promoters to help them with expenses if they feel that using chip timing is too much of a financial burden. This offer was also made specifically to the Tax Day promoters on several occasions. Frankly, it has been a wash or some promoters have even made money with chips because we give the $10 rental fee directly to the promoter to help offset costs. Tax Day was cancelled due to the lack of volunteers. - Some chips were not reading – True. I made the mistake of suggesting that riders use electrical tape to secure their chip until we had the mounting system shipped. This was a big mistake. Electrical tape is designed to insulate electrical signals. I can now attest that it works. Once we got the tape off of the chips, they have been working extremely well. - If the chip code is not in the database, you get a DNS – True. We are working with SBO and SBE to correct this problem. SBO has made great strides to correct it. The chip reader does nothing more than give a time stamp that is associated with the chip ID every time a chip crosses the line. It is the SBO software that actually takes the times and processes it so we can get an actual result. The SBO software will correlate the chip ID with the rider associated with that ID and give them a time. When all works well, it will place the rider in the proper field and then sort them based on time. The problem arises when there is no rider associated with a chip ID or the rider’s chip ID was entered incorrectly. That creates the “DNS” since the software doesn’t correlate any reading for the rider it thinks that he/she never started. We also had about 30 chips that were shipped with a different ID number on the chip and the label on the packaging. Many riders entered the ID from the label. - Registering same day creates a greater chance of error – True. Until recently, when a rider registers same day, the chip code had to be entered by hand. However, SBO has worked up a software fix in their registration that most of the time will bring the chip code over to the same day registration file. But, it doesn’t work for all circumstances. We are also having a huge issue with riders showing up within thirty minutes of their start time and registering. This creates havoc and chaos at registration which leads to mistakes. Data entry is the biggest reason we are having issues. - There have been incorrect times posted using the chips – True. But, the chips have been to blame in only three instances. As state earlier, we had about three chips that were misreading. Other than that, they are always correct. Again, all of our problems are human error. At the State Time Trial Championships, we had an issue with everyone’s time being off by about 14 seconds. This was caused by the starter’s clock and the chip reader’s clock being off by that amount. The difference between the hand scored times and the chip times was virtually static. - The Chip System failed at the State Time Trial Championships – False. We had a big issue in the latter fields because there were multiple times where riders in the same field were assigned the same bib number. That obviously caused the software to lock up when it couldn’t determine which file went to which rider. Again, human error. This explains most of the problems. If you are still with me and interested, here is how the process should work: Everyone has a chip. If you do not have one, you can rent one for $10 at the race. The rental chips have been purchased by the UCA. The proceeds from the rentals go directly to the promoter to offset expenses. In almost all cases, SBE is responsible to time the race. They are the ones that set up the chip reader and produce the raw data that has the chip ID associated with a time stamp. SBO registers the riders and ensures that all of the chip IDs are associated with all the riders in the registration file. SBO takes the raw data provided by SBE and runs it through a program called “Race Day”. The program will associate the times with the riders and produce a result. In the meantime, the officials are hand-scoring the race. The results that are produced by SBE and SBO are given to the chief judge to go over. If there have been anomalies (free laps due to a mechanical for instance), the chief judge will inform SBO and the changes are made to the results and they are posted. Riders have 15 minutes to protest. If there is a legitimate protest, the 15 minutes starts again once the corrected results are posted. The UCA pays SBO to handle the posting of the results to the website. SBO posts them to the website and assigns the proper points in accordance with the bylaws. The season is far enough along that on June 17 we are going to have a meeting to discuss where we stand with the chips (among other things). Hopefully, we can continue to streamline the process and get things working as advertised. When everything goes as planned, it is a great process and results are very accurate and timely. This has been evident at several races. We need to get the system to work well at every race. We will get there. I am sorry that there have been so many issues so far. But, the system will become one where you as the rider will grow to appreciate it and trust it. Again, the chips work. We are just struggling with some human and operating issues that we are working through. Thanks for your understanding and patience. As always, please feel free to ask questions or comment. Ferg

I regret to inform you that the Porcupine Brighton Criterium will not happen
this year due to construction and road conditions for the Criterium. With that said I want to make sure that it is not misunderstood that this
will have no effect on the Porcupine Hill Climb as it will go on as in past
years on Saturday July 11th 2009. Mike Meldrum

Since our new "Masters B" category was added for the 2009 racing season I am
noticing some riders are attempting to double dip on upgrade points. We will
allow Masters B riders to use their results for up to Cat 3.
For Example: A rider in Masters B category places 5th as a Cat 5, is
upgraded to Cat 4 (after total of 10 mass start races) then tries to again use
the same result from the same race for his Cat 3 upgrade. You will only get to
use the same race for one upgrade.
I may also be advising some riders of their forced automatic upgrade. If
you have earned well over the adequate points for an upgrade, you probably need
to start working for teammates or face imminent upgrade!
See you at the races! Cameron Hoffman

There has been some new information about the timing chips and the best way to mount them so they read properly. See the attachment here for the latest.

Hi all, IMPORTANT! Please observe the following protocol for timing chip usage at all UCA events. FYI: use of a timing chip is not an option. You must either own or rent a chip to be scored at all UCA events. Before the next race: If you have not already done so, make sure your chip code is entered on your profile at sportaseonline. Here are the instructions: Go to new.sportsbaseonline.com and sign in (upper right-hand corner). Your sign in on this site is the same as the old SBO site. Go to “Profile” (upper right-hand corner). Click on the “Cycling” tab. Scroll down to the “Winning Time Chip Code” box. Enter your chip ID found on the front of your chip.
The timing chip must be mounted on the front fork and be oriented vertically. The best way is with the chip right side up (numbers at the bottom) and facing out. Please don't mount your chip in any other location, or you run the risk of not being scored. Chips carried in your jersey pocket will probably not read.
At the races: If you did not pre-register for the event at sportsbase, make sure you have your chip code with you at sign up and relay the code to the folks there. They need that number to register you on "day of" even if the code is entered in your Sportsbase profile! Either take the chip with you or write the code down. If you did pre-register for the event and have entered your chip code on your Sportsbase profile, you are set! The system will work as advertised. The scoring errors so far have been overwhelmingly anomalies created by: no chip, improper mounting, no chip code, chip code in the system but registered "day of" and no code given then, switching chip with your teammate, chip in your pocket, etc. Please be responsible, follow the protocol, and check your results after the race. Make any protests in the 15 minute time period, and stay to check again. This is especially important as we gain momentun on the scoring system so we can learn. Also, you still have to wear your number, even if you have your chip dialed in. The jersey numbers are a back up just in case. Thanks, Jeff Clawson

There have been some questions about this weekend’s Bear Lake Classic. It looks like a great weekend of racing and great weather. Registration on SBO closes on Wednesday, not Thursday! There is also an individual time trial on Friday evening and a team time trial on Sunday morning.
Remember to please arrive early! Many of the scoring problems that we are having are caused by rushing through registration at the last minute.
Number placement is paramount! While we work through the issues with the chip timing system, we are very reliant on numbers. Please take the time to make sure that your number is properly pinned and not wrinkled or folded.
Make sure that your chip is on your bike. We had a few instances last weekend where riders forgot to mount their chip on their fork.
Thanks,
Ferg

There have been several issues and questions regarding the results and chip timing. I would like to address some of these. First, there were several “DNS” listings in the results last Saturday. The vast majority was caused by people that have not registered their chip code in their profile on the SBO site. If your chip ID is not paired to your name, the software throws out your chip reading as extraneous data. When we run the results, there is no chip reading next to your name so you end up with a DNS. This can be fixed, but we need your help. Everyone, please take the time to make sure that you chip is registered properly by doing the following: Go to new.sportsbaseonline.com ad sign in (upper right-hand corner). Your sign in on this site is the same as the old SBO site. Go to “Profile” (upper right-hand corner). Click on the “Cycling” tab. Scroll down to the “Winning Time Chip Code” box. Enter your chip ID found on the front of your chip. SBO is working with Winning Time go get a chip reader to be used at registration. This will allow us to double-check this information. Until then, it is very important that everyone makes sure that their code is registered correctly. We are still learning. I apologize for those of you that raced in the morning on Saturday. We had some issues. It was really our first big test of the system. The chip readings were not available until after the initial results were posted. That created a huge time lag and several mistakes. I am very happy to report that the afternoon results went extremely well. They were mostly posted before the riders got back and were very accurate. All of the problems we had (with one exception) were due to incorrect data in the database or chips not being paired with the rider. There were only about 5 issues with the afternoon results. I am very optimistic about how things are progressing. I think that everyone will start to see the benefits of the system from here on out. Thanks, Ferg BTW, if you left or lost something at the race Saturday, please check at Bountiful Bicycle Center. They have quite a few items in their lost and found from the race. 801-295-6711.
