There has been some questions about location of the timing chips. I have seen some chips mounted to the bottom of the fork, top of the fork and even underneath the stem.
While there is no official location for the mount, the general consensus is they should be mounted to the top of the front fork right below the brake. Mounting the chip down low on the fork may afford a slight advantage in distance (negligible) but will be more likely to slide down.
This is the response from Jon Gallager:
It should be mounted on the fork, up higher near the brake. It doesn't matter which side. That location will approximate the "leading edge of the front wheel" USA Cycling rule that chips normally can't speak to. If everyone puts it on the fork, then we'll be pretty close for the largest number of riders. Riders can put the chip anywhere else that they want to, but it's almost guaranteed to be further back on the bike which would generate a later chip read and perhaps push that rider back in the results in a close sprint. Underneath the stem is not a good place, as it might be further forward than the fork, and we'll get a bigger variation in actual location due to stem length. Fork mounting is subject to the rake creating variation, but that's not the problem it was 8 or 10 years ago.
Keep in mind that Jon will still be using the cameras to judge close finishes. The officials will also be there to separate any sprint finishes so the aspect of after-race protests will still be an option.
