Starting with the first UCA event of the season, UCA racers will benefit from more accurate and timely scoring through the use of electronic timing. All points events on the UCA calendar will be required to use electronic scoring through use of a timing system and bike-mounted transponders (chips). The UCA has contracted with Winning Time for scoring equipment, which will be purchased by Jon Gallager of SBE. Jon and his SBE crew will be on hand to score the majority of UCA races. (SBE also uses high-speed cameras, so the scoring should be very accurate) Some promoters will be using other timing companies to score their races, but the UCA will track all rider’s points the same regardless of timing company.
The UCA Board is hoping for a smooth transition to this system. There is a possibility the Utah Crit Series (RMR / Saltair) will be the initial proving ground for the timing system. If the Utah Crit Series decides to adopt the system, the same timing chip be used at these races in addition to UCA events. Watch this space for more information.
There are a couple of important points for riders to be aware of. Please read the following information carefully so there are no misunderstandings.
• All riders will be required to wear a timing chip at all events. Chips will be sold to UCA members for the special price of $40.95. This is a one-time cost and the chip can be used for several years. The chips will mount to the front fork.
• Chip batteries will need to be changed periodically, probably once a year. SBO will scan the chip at events to verify if the battery needs replacing, and can assist with this on the spot.
• Racers are encouraged to purchase their chip online at www.sportsbaseonline.com ($40.95 price includes S&H). If a rider wants to purchase their chip at a UCA event, SBO will have them available, however, when a rider purchases a chip online, their chip ID will be entered into their SBO profile. If they purchase the chip at the races, the rider will have to go online and update their SBO profile with the chip ID. It is preferable that riders purchase their chips online to avoid any confusion on this important step.
• The chips should be ready for shipment around February 1, 2009. We will post the details here at a later date.
• The UCA will offer rental chips for the price of $10.00 per day at UCA events. Riders renting chips MUST secure the rental with a credit card. The individual’s credit card will be charged $10.00 if they return the chip back after the race. If they do not return it, they will be charged $40.95 for the chip. You can NOT use cash or checks to rent a chip.
We have created a Forum for questions you might have about the timing system. If you have any questions after reading this, please post them on the Forums...
